THE 2008 TCCA SHOW: A GOOD TIME
HAD BY ALL!
The 2008 10th Anniversary TCCA show was held April
23-27 in Glen Rose, Texas. The location was a proven winner,
as it was the site for the 2007 NACA National Show. With
a roster of new officers and a rookie show secretary, the
TCCA staff approached the show with an enthusiastic team
spirit, and a passion for planning in advance. We were all
concerned about entries, with $4+/gallon diesel. However,
the Postal Service delivered a flood of entry packets, which
totaled 288 head of cattle and 572 entries. Wow!
Wednesday, April 23rd was check-in day. The check-in crew
was blessed: arrivals started at 1:45 pm, and came in a steady
stream until 7 pm. Stacy Lynn (TCCA Vice-President and Show
Manager), Dale Price (TCCA President), and Benny Maben (TCCA
Director) made an efficient check-in crew. They verified paperwork & brands,
off-loaded cattle, and sent them to their stalls in record
time. TCCA Directors Billy & Dallas Luke and their ranch
hand JJ Hearron were additional invaluable help in getting
cattle tagged and situated. It was a good thing check-in went
so fast, as a line of thunderstorms with 2-inch hail took
dead aim at Glen Rose. Just as the last trailer of cattle
were offloaded, the squall line hit. Jay Hillman's horse was
a mighty unhappy camper, briefly tied to the Hashknife trailer
outside while Jay was scrambling to get everything situated,
when the skies opened! Jay himself for a minute looked like
a cartoon figure—as he ran to get his horse out of the
weather, and had to hang on to the fence for dear life while
the winds blew! The results were fine, as everyone was A.-O.K.
Several inches of rain fell in 2 hours. The access road to
the facility was flooded, and there was 9 inches of water
running through the show barn between the show arena and the
concourse. One hour after the rain stopped, just as the last
2 exhibitors arrived, the flood was gone. There were no long-lasting
problems from the weather, other than where water blew and
stood in some stalls. It was tough, though, tagging the cattle--sale
glue just doesn't stick to damp corriente hides!
Despite the weather, conformation class judging started only
5 minutes after the specified time on Thursday morning. Marvin
Knutson waded his way through a brain-draining, 20-pen Get
of Sire class, then 137 head of bulls in 5 classes. Duke Sundt
dealt with a 6-pen Produce of Dam class, then 143 head of
females in 5 classes. Thank you, Mel Gnatkowski, Wayne Lynn,
TCCA Director Craig Dorrance, ECCA President Gene Matthews,
Mike Camp and others, for your invaluable help as ring stewards!
Our thanks are also extended to Billy & Dallas Luke and
JJ Hearron for their rapid and accurate help in pulling & staging
cattle for these huge classes, and to Ricky Mara and the Wau-Ban-See
ladies for helping put the cattle back in their pens.
Duke Sundt had an interesting, non-sanctioned assignment:
the Ugly Cow Class. All corrientes are born beautiful, but
sometimes things happen that make them unbeautiful. After
careful perusal of the class (while consuming his favorite
adult beverage), Duke selected Wan-Ban-See Ranch's Cates Cow
908, better known as "Jawsephina." Jawsephina was
stepped on by her mom as a calf, fracturing her jaw. She looks
scary, but she produces beautiful babies! Duke's choice for
second place was the 2 year old heifer, Jandal's Cherry Girl
606. He was particularly struck by her impressive negative
slack!
After the TCCA annual membership meeting, a Welcome Reception
was held for all show attendees in the concourse of the Expo
Center Thursday night. Fajitas and other Mexican food was
served--yum! The reception broke up around 10 pm, and re-convened
around the Wau-Ban-See Cantina in the lobby area of the host
hotel. A good time was had by all, singing songs with Jeff
Nourse, Mel Gnatkowski, Benny Maben and others. Kinnan Goleman
whipped up his usual delicious Margaritas with his gas-powered
blender. Plates of home-made cookies also appeared everywhere.
Hotel management was very tolerant of our impromptu sing-a-long,
and even participated!
The performance classes on Friday continued the precedent
established at the 2007 TCCA show: hire NFR-caliber ropers
to do the roping, so that each animal gets as consistent a
handle and fair chance to be judged as possible. The ropers
hired by the TCCA Show Manager were fabulous, and very pleased
with the quality of cattle they were roping. 137 head of cattle
participated in the performance classes.
After the performance classes, a hotly-contested Breeders
Roping was held. 23 ranches entered! The Wau-Ban-See Cantina
fired back up at the hotel afterwards, and everybody socialized
until the wee hours.
TCCA Directors Benny Maben and Billy Luke put on a superb
Members Roping series on Saturday, with an excellent turn
out of teams for each division. The ropings even finished
in time for everybody to get cleaned up for the awards banquet!
Ranch House Bar B Q catered the banquet, providing delicious
brisket and ribs. TCCA President Dale Price presided over
the awards presentation. Stacy Lynn, TCCA Vice President and
Show Manager, had ordered a new style of awards ribbons, with
beautiful new combinations of colors, that was much admired.
TCCA Director Billy Luke donated custom embroidered horn wraps
for all ribbon winners in the performance classes. TCCA Director
Benny Maben found sponsors for an impressive trophy saddle
for high money winner of the Members Roping series. Custom
Wilson Capron bits for the winners of the Breeders Roping,
custom Wilson Capron spurs for the 3 Grand Champions, and
custom TCCA arena jackets for the All-Around Winners topped
off the presentation.
After the awards banquet, the Silent Auction went for another
few minutes. The bidding was hotly contested for the numerous
items, especially for the embossed glass bowl filled with
Joanne Fuchs' brownies! Mel Gnatkowski then presided over
the spirited (in more ways than one!) live auction.
For the 3rd and final time, the party adjourned to the Wau-Ban-See
Cantina at the hotel. It was sad, knowing our fun time at
TCCA's 2008 show was coming to a close. However, we're already
eagerly looking forward to next year!
To all our sponsors, donors, and volunteers: our heartfelt
thanks and gratitude for your support! To all the exhibitors
who braved $4+/gal diesel and the fickle Texas weather: our
deepest thanks, and we hope you had as much fun as we did!
See ya'll next year!
