2009 2nd Annual Summer Team Roping
and Cattle Show/Sale

TCCA HOSTS ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL SUMMER ROPING & PERFORMANCE SHOW

by Janice W. Price, DVM

It was hot and steamy in Bulverde, Texas on Saturday, July 11, 2009. However, the weather did not slow down the NACA-registered roping animals, or stifle the enthusiasm of the ropers. TCCA's 2nd Annual Summer Roping & Performance Show was off and running!

Cibolo Livery Stables in Bulverde, Texas, home of Tejas Rodeo Company, hosted the event. They provided ample pens to hold the roping cattle for the weekend, as well as spacious parking, RV hookups, a cantina and concessions with a full menu. After getting the cattle settled Friday night, TCCA members & exhbitors headed over to the host hotel, La Quinta Inn & Suites on Hardy Oak Blvd. in San Antonio. Billy Luke, TCCA Board Member & Show Manager, had organized a special rate for TCCA members, including beer & wine during "happy hour" check-in! (It is unknown if hotel management ended up regretting that decision, with so many ropers around...)

Cattle were wrapped and tagged promptly at 8 am on July 11; a total of 23 animals were entered in the Performance Class. Bobby Beauchamp, TCCA Board Member, graciously donated his time and expertise to judge the performance animals.

Books closed with a total of 159 teams. The roping began on time, and proceeded smoothly. Many ropers commented on the quality and consistency of the cattle. The winning ropers were Joey Gonzalez of Bulverde, Texas (header) and Landon Luke, of Burnet, Texas (heeler).

After careful perusal of his scorecard, Bobby Beauchamp chose 4B Cow 814, owned by Barham Cattle Company, as the Grand Champion Roping Animal. Valley B Bull C Bar 4, owned by C Bar 4 Ranch, was Reserve Champion. BL Bull 854, owned by Rockin BL Ranch, took 3rd place.

The 2nd Annual TCCA Summer Show & Roping helped spread the word to many local ropers about how good NACA-registered roping stock are. In addition, it was an effective fund-raiser, netting over $1,800 for the organization.

The TCCA extends its deepest gratitude to Billy, Dallas, Ruth & Barney Luke for their help in organizing the event and bringing in sponsors. Dale Price, Russell & Brady Barham, Bobby & Sharon Beauchamp, Craig Dorrance, JoAnne Hammock, and Benny & Sue Maben were all instrumental in getting animals wrapped & tagged, working the chute, bringing up the pen and insuring the smooth running of the roping. A special thanks is due to Bobby Beauchamp for donating his judging skills.

Make sure to mark your calendars for the 3rd Annual TCCA Summer Roping & Performance Show, to be held July, 2010!

YES! Performance traits of cattle are Genetic!

So, you are asking
"How are TCCA Corriente Cattle judged as roping animals"?

Superior Roping Corrientes will:

  • show sufficient strength and stamina to be durable
  • be calm in the chute
  • break smoothly out of the chute
  • run straight and steady
  • hold its head steady or up
  • handle nicely on a rope
  • bounce out smoothly after the head is caught, even with tension on the rope

A Corriente (when handled properly) should NOT:

  • fight its head
  • run blindly or erractically
  • cut behind the ropers
  • duck its head
  • lie down (before both ends are roped)
  • jump too high
  • drag with its hind legs after the head is roped

These traits ARE infuenced by genetics! Come see how nice it is to rope superior TCCA Corrientes! Bring a trailer with some extra space and take a few home with you. Cattle for sale on site!
