Texas Corriente Cattle Association's

12th Annual Show and Roping

April 21-24, 2010

A TEXAS SPRING TO REMEMBER

by Stacy Lynn

As Texas Bluebonnets bloom with greatness, the attendants to the 2010 Texas Corriente show enjoyed the beautiful wild flowers of the Texas highways as they traveled to Glen Rose Texas April 21st. The snow and wet winter has really blessed Texas with a beautiful spring carpeting bluebonnets, indian paint brushes, black eyed susan and butter cups, creating a unforgettable sight on the roadways. The trailers were unloaded and cattle tagged and in the pen. Many of the exhibitors found each other in a new sports bar that is in Glen Rose for supper-- a welcome site for hungry travelers and those checking in cattle.

Thursday morning began with the Get of Sire Class, as new show secretarty Pam Smith stayed busy in the officem sending out pull sheets, while Billy and Dallas Luke, with their teams, kept the cattle coming. Smiles and laughter filled the arena as everyone greeted old faces and welcomed the new.

At the end of the arena veteran Dale Burks, this year’s recipient to the Pioneer Award, looked on with close friend Robert Cofelt, as the show was kicked off about 8:15 am. It was so nice to see Dale. He has missed very few Texas Corriente Shows and always has a welcoming smile and hug for all that attend.

In the stands sat many exhibitors visiting and waiting on the results from each class. One by one, each class was judged by this years judges Roger Schalla (Bulls) and Jarred Long (Females). Thursday evening ended with the TCCA membership meeting and a welcome reception, serving a great meal of mexican food and great fellowship.

Of course the extra entertainment was the chute-dogging, in which even Tobe Moore tried his hand, leaving him with his own mark to remember, which he proudly displayed at the Wau Ban See Cantina later.

The Team Ropers arrived Friday morning to demonstrate the performance classes. For the past few years the TCCA has offered a pot amount for our performance team ropers. This has proven to be a win-win for both the exhibitors as well as the Team Ropers. A point system is used called a stroke count, Jean Poythress is always gracious enough to keep the tally. Jean watches every run and keeps up with who catches, misses, and who will have the best score when the last animal is ran. This allows the ropers to have a small competition among themselves of consitency, not speed, alowing them to exhibit the show cattle with very few misses and, of course, is great to watch. Top of the pack this year were Kevin Stewart and Brent McDowell. Kevin roped Including the championship round, 32 straight clean head catches this year, that means he was 100% for the day -WOW! Way To Go. The next team, following very closely, was Luke Brown and Martin Lucero, with Brooke Beardon and Kory King winning the third position. We appreciate all the team ropers. They are truly some of the very best in the industry and always provide some great watching and do a wonderful job demonstrating our cattle.

The bulldoggers did their magic making sure all their cattle were down. Thanks to Jarred New and his crew for a great job. Bulldogging is always fun to watch.

Friday night finished-up with the Breeder’s Roping. Bar M Ranch from Marion Ks and LF Ranch from Desdemona Tx., taking home the saddles for 2010.

Saturday started off with the Member's Roping, but the true exciting event was the Youth Dummy roping. Carlie Cooper of Stephenville Texas took the top honors of the 9 to 12 group. Carlie is one of the daughter of Troy and Kim Cooper who own Cooper’s Country Store and are always great sponsors and supporters of the TCCA Show. The 6 to 8 age group turned out to be quite a battle, ending up in a near tie between Kenzie Cooper and Brianna Stringfellow, with Brianna finally edging out the tough compition - good job girls. As the 5 and under group got up to the roping dummy it was plain to see the excitement in all the little ones eyes. In fact, when David Holt won the buckle it was not going anywhere he was not. Little David did not get the attention for long, as his older sister had a fight with a rock ledge and found herself wisked away to the emergency room for some slight repair work. Although quite a scare for all around it seems a full recovery is in the future for Ellie. We are all so grateful for that. Sporting a bandaid and large knot on her head, she returned to the hotel and ask Mike Camp to cut off her hospital braclett while showing off her head, before going to the room to rest.

A large group of exhibitors gathered in the breakfast room and lobbly of the Hotel enjoying the Wau Ban See Cantina before the banquet. Finishing up the end of a relaxing show eating texas BBQ and with the banquet mirroring the Texas hiways with decorations of the wildflowers decorating the room. Awarding Dale Burks this year’s Pioneer Award became quite a laugh as Stacy Lynn ask Dale if it was true he left his bull at a show. Dale responded “ yes I did” . Stacy then ask when he figured it out and Dale responded “ when we got home” as if when else would you figure out something like that. Of course the room was filled with laughter. Thanks for the positive words, Dale. The TCCA appriencates all your support over the years. At the end of the awards, the results of a non-sanctioned jackpot class was awarded, where some good ol' cash was handed out.

After all the awards were handed out, the auction began with Mel Gnatkowski asking people what do you want to give, going once, going twice, Sold! Although the favorite line is “Oh you need to touch it...let them touch it”, leaving the bidder wanting it for at least one more bid. Thanks to everyone who donated to this years auction. Wow, what a spread, from bronzes to homemade potholders and famous brownies; there were some really neat items. What fun it was!

Well the 2010 show is in the books and the plans for 2011 are about to begin... after a little rest of course!. Thank you to all those that supported the TCCA this year. We really appriciate it. Hope everyone had a safe trip home and thanks for the memories.
